This page will serve as my repository for research about the Regiment. Most of the collection will be downloadable PDF files containing articles pertaining to the Regiment from all periods in our history. Pictures, whether found through my own research or provided by Marsmen and their families, will be posted in the Gallery section of the website. Orders for unit awards will also be archived here. Check back often as I update this page with research I’ve collected over the years.
Articles and reference documents
The Most Forgotten Unit – Master of Arts thesis by Matthew Camina, published by Texas A&M University International. Provided with the permission of the author for education purposes. Mr. Camina wrote this thesis to discuss the significance of the MARS Task Force in CBI. Mr. Camina’s grandfather served with the Regiment as a machine gunner in Burma.
The Jungleer – Vol. 1 Issue 5, September 7,2009 – This issue contains an article about the Change of Command ceremony for the outgoing 1-124th Cavalry at Camp Liberty, Iraq.
US Army Order of Battle 1919-1941 – The Regiment is referenced on page 639. I am uploading the entire Order of Battle because the chapter introductions about Cavalry organization is a fascinating read.
Over the Hills and Far Away: The MARS Task Force, the Ultimate Model for Long Range Penetration Warfare – article by Dr. Troy Sacquety about the MARS Task Force in general but includes information about the 124th Cavalry. The Association is proud to have assisted Dr. Sacquety by providing information about 1LT Jack Knight for his induction into the Commando Hall of Fame at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The Association also provided copies of the Marsmen in Burma book to be included in the USASOC library. The link to the article is a web-optimized PDF. The Cavalry Journal – Volume XLVIII Number 4, July-August 1939 – PDF excerpted pages 87 and 134. News items from the Regiment but of particular note is the mention of the fourth consecutive winning of the Pershing Trophy by the Regiment.
Of Mules and Men: The 612th and 613th Field Artillery Battalions (Pack) in Burma – While not necessarily about the 124th Cavalry, this is a short article about the field artillery battalions that were attached to the MARS Task Force and supported the Marsmen with 75mm Pack Howitzers.
Ex-CBI Roundup – July 1954 – Many references to the 124th Cavalry in the issue but of note is the cover featuring 1LT Jack Knight and the article starting on page 10 about his heroic actions on February 2, 1945.
The Big Bend Sentinel – December 10, 1943 – Marfa, Texas newspaper that offers a glimpse into life on border patrol prior to the deployment to Burma. Page 3 has an article about the new Service Club that opened at Fort D.A. Russell.
Chicago Tribune – circa February 1945 – Article in the Chicago Tribune reporting on the exploits of Sergeant Kim Hill during a battle in the Burma campaign.

General Order 2014-11 – This is the General Order for the award of the Meritorius Unit Citation to all Troops within 1st Squadron, 124th Cavalry Regiment for meritorius service during OIF 09-11.
Permanent Orders 345-09 – This is the Permanent Order for the awarding of the Meritoritus Unit Citation to all Troops within 1st Squadron, 124th Cavalry Regiment for meritorius service during OIF 09-11.

CBI Roundup – Online copy of the CBI Roundup newspaper that was distributed to US forces in the China Burma India theater of operation.
Texas Military Forces Museum – The Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas has an exhibit on the 124th Cavalry in World War II. Additionally, the Regiment’s involvement in other conflicts following WWII can be found in the 49th Armored Division, Cold War, and Global War on Terror Galleries.
Personal Accounts
Account of Burma Campaign by Sergeant Raymond Baehr – This is a personal account of the Burma campaign as told by Sergeant Raymond Baehr. This account was provided by the family of Sergeant Baehr. Sergeant Baehr joined the Regiment as a replacement and was assigned to Troop F on 25 January 1945, two weeks before the Battle of Knight’s Hill, where he was wounded.
Timetable of Movement – Timetable of movement for the Regiment as recorded by Staff Sergeant Arthur Eberle. This document records the movement of the Regiment from Fort Brown, Texas on 10 May 1944 to its deactivation on 1 July 1945.
Burma Map – Scan of a map that was carried and annotated by SGT Paul Molnar and generously donated to the Association by Mr. Jerry Duffy. The original map has been subsequently donated to the Texas Military Forces Museum in Austin, Texas. Given the age of the map and the condition in which it was stored, it was difficult to get an absolutely flat scan. However, you can see the route that was marched, bivouac sites, and sites of battles annotated on the map. A longer term project will be to transcribe this information to Google Earth and make that KML file available here. (Note – file size is around 40MB)
