The long awaited updateSo, what has been happening with the Squadron since my last update? I know I promised some articles about the history of this place, but that involves a little research and I haven't had much time to sit down and work on that, let alone an update for this site. I've been asking around for pictures and want to get some equal contributions for the other Troops, but given how spread out we are, it's been a little difficult to not be heavier on the Alpha Troop news. With regards to Alpha Troop, I'm still in the process of gathering photos so expect a pretty huge update when I finally get those uploaded. We've had some exciting visitors to our basecamp over the holidays, culminating in a visit by Governor Rick Perry, who wanted to come to Iraq to see his Guardsmen at work. Kid Rock, Zac Brown, Kelly Pickler, Lewis Black and a few other comedians visited in mid December to put on a great comedy and music filled show. I have a few pictures from that and even some video that I need to shrink and convert for streaming. Expect to see those in the near future. Granger Smith spent Christmas Day in Baghdad and put on a great show as well. Governor Perry visited Camp Slayer and said hello to HHT and Troop A. Photo ops were abundant and the Governor spent time talking to the soldiers of 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, Troop A prior to their rolling out on a combat patrol. Six soldiers from HHT and Troop A were selected to be pinned with the Iraq Campaign Medal and all received a Governor of Texas coin. The Governor also posed with the Aggies in the Squadron for a photo that will be published in a future issue of Texas Aggie Magazine. The Squadron continues to perform well on their various missions. 1st Platoon, Alpha Troop has become very familiar with their area of operation and have been working with the Sons of Iraq to current level of security remains in our area. Things have been relatively quiet and some of us that were here in 2004 have commented on a regular basis about how different it is around here. Know that your Troopers remain safe and life is pretty good here in "Paradise". Posted by SFCWyatt Tuesday, January 06, 2009 (18:58:08) comments? |

A letter from the SCOBetter late than never: To the friends and families of 1-124 CAV: Greetings from Iraq. All your loved-ones have made it to their assigned locations safely. While operational security prevents me from sharing many details, I can tell you the Squadron is doing many different and important missions in the general Baghdad area. We are making a positive difference for the Iraqi people during this important time in their country's history. Your soldier is well trained and has been given the best equipment the Army has to offer. In fact, I have seen active duty units with older equipment than our own. Times have changed. My Troop Command Teams, Squadron Staff and I want to wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving. This is a time for inward reflection and to count the many blessings we Americans have been given. We enjoy a freedom that is not common in this part of the world. The personal sacrifice of you and your family has helped ensure that Americans will continue to enjoy our freedom. I am extremely thankful for your soldier's dedication to his duty, our unit and the country. In closing, I want you to know you all are in my prayers, please keep us in yours. Sincerely, -Rob LTC Robert Gaudsmith Commander, 1-124 Cav (TF KNIGHT) Posted by SFCWyatt Thursday, December 11, 2008 (19:36:49) comments? |

The Squadron is on the groundI can finally divulge that the Squadron is on the ground and settling into it's mission. We're a little spread out, but all is well so far. Alpha Troop has assumed command of the force protection mission here in our little corner of the Victory Base Complex and, as usual, we're shining. Okay, maybe a little modesty is in order. But the guys are working hard and learning their new jobs quickly and well. Life on Slayer is pretty good. If we're not in a lake house, we're living in trailers. Definitely a step up from our last time here...especially for me because the haji tent I lived in last time was blown away by a sand storm. These living quarters don't blow away. You all have our addresses now. I would say that snack foods are appreciated but we are fed so well here, I don't know if we can find the space in our stomachs for anything else. Phone cards are a nice thing to have, especially if your loved one ended up buying a cell phone over here. Where we live on Slayer tends to get pretty crappy service but it still works for the most part. Iraqna and Asia Cell are the two providers and they sell prepaid phone cards to recharge the cell phones. It is also possible to buy international calling cards and call the Iraqi cell phone from home for a decent rate. Incoming calls and text messages to both networks are free. We just pay for outgoing calls and text messages. The DFAC (dining facility) has Dr. Pepper! Or at least HAD Dr. Pepper. Stay tuned, I'll try to have more to post later. I'm thinking about writing a few posts about the history of this area for those history buffs and those that are just curious. Once I've had time to settle down, I'll start the research. Are we there yet?We haven't quite made it to Iraq yet. I sure have and things have definitely changed for the better here. I came up in advance of the Troop and am learning about my new mission. Not exactly what I expected but I'll make the best of it. I won't go into any more detail regarding the mission until I clarify what I can discuss. I will briefly describe our living conditions instead. Alpha Troop has fallen in on several houses on a lake and the remainder will live in trailers called CHUs (Container Housing Units). The rest of the Squadron has similar housing. It is a significant step up from the last time we were here. Beds instead of cots and real roofs instead of tent canvas. The motto here is "Another day in paradise". The scenery is definitely nice with several palaces surrounding a lake and smaller houses scattered around as well. This camp was formerly a vacation area for Saddam and his family. We have all of the amenities we'll need to stay comfortable. There's a small PX, with the larger one being a bus ride away on Liberty. We have an MWR center, an Internet Cafe with a phone center, a decent DFAC, and a small gym. The rest of the Troop will be here soon and once we settle in, I'll upload pictures from Kuwait and our new home. Regarding an address, I have nothing official yet but will work on that today. Stay tuned for an update. Posted by SFCWyatt Monday, November 17, 2008 (05:43:31) comments? |
